  1. Jimmy Witherspoon had a long and varied career, but it is only recently that his output has been treated with the respect it deserves. Unfortunately, Spoon's Blues is not one of the more exemplary releases of Witherspoon's work, and its rather confusing choice of songs (from various periods of the artist's career) does not make for a satisfying listen.4/
  2. Backed by the Duke Robillard Band, this is Spoon's last recording, and one of his best. Jimmy's style has always combined the best of blues and Kansas City jazz, and Robillard's band pulls off these arrangements with understated elegance. Spoon is in fine voice on this session, and his phrasing and timing are impeccable, as always.5/5(2).
